With the release of the movie Jurassic Park, the early Jurassic Theropod Dilophosaurus became rather a intimate sight in dinosaur model series.  Despite the very dubious representation of this fellow member of the Coelophysoidea in the film, Dilophosaurus models have appeared in the Carnegie Collectibles series, Bullyland, Schleich Dinosaurs and not so long ago in the Procon/Collecta range.

One of the most recent models of this queer dinosaur is the Wild Safari Dilophosaurus (Safari Ltd of the USA).  This new model is an altered representation of this meat-eating dinosaur and presents Dilophosaurus as a more lithe and agile creature with a long slender tail.  The model measures 17 cm long and the tail makes up half the total length of the model.  This meticulously hand-painted replica contrasts with earlier representations of Dilophosaurus, such as the Carnegie Dinosaur Collectibles range.  In this earlier model, for example, a pair of Dilophosaurs are portrayed together, a homage to the fact that since three fossil skeletons were found in close proximity, Dilophosaurus may have lived in packs.

Getting the Details Right with Dilophosaurus

The Wild Safari Dilophosaurus shows a terrific amount of detail, the neck is much more slender in aspect and the two skull crests (after which this dinosaur is named), are narrow and delicate looking.  These crests are much more accurately reproduced when this queer model is equated with other earlier representations.  The legs are much thinner, altho care has been taken to show the musculature and to give the impression of a strong runner.  After all, palaeontologists believe that Dilophosaurus was agile and fast.

The Dilophosaurus Colouration

The model is painted a dark brown pigment with a lighter tan under-body. The head shows flashes of colour, typical of an animal with crests that were used for visual display.  The flesh covering the anteorbital fenestra is painted blue and the skull crests are a reddish hue.

In the close up view of the head of the Dilophosaurus model, the blue flash on the side of the head may without doubt or question be seen, the crests are also prominent and the fine paintwork around the gaping jaws is revealed.  The distinctive, kinked upper jaw of this peculiar dinosaur is visible on this replica.

This new addition to the Wild Safari Dinos model series from Safari is perchance one of the best pocket cash models of Dilophosaurus presently available.

4Minature safari Dinos Toob
By Mary Lloyd
Kids love the toy, however, I feel they are a little too small. It did make a outstanding gift, though, and a outstanding stocking stuffer.

5Dino Toob is Dino-Mite!
By Joseph G. Degaetano
I used to think dinosaurs were just big, scary lizards that roamed the world thousands of years ago. I never knew they could–in miniaturized plastic form–touch my soul in such a unfathomed way. Playing with these dinosaurs takes me back to a more innocent time in our Nation’s history. I once in a while get lost in their eyes, marveling how they ought to have was struggling to stay one step in front of the caveman’s spear. These little guys have taught me something in regards to myself as well: I am larger than a dinosaur. In fact, I am larger than entire toob of dinosaurs!

Seriously, these are finelooking cool. My daughter and I have enjoyed them. She also likes the spinning globe that is the cap of the tube.

5Used these as cupcake toppers
By Sunshine Girl
I threw a wild animal party for my son and used these as cupcake toppers. Kids loved them and they took them home along with their goody bags.
