For as long as I may do not forget the RC industry has gone back and forth amongst nitro and electric motors. Just a few years ago most off-road trucks and buggies were running Nitro due to the raw power it delivered. A recent visit to my local sideline shop this week reveals a completely dissimilar picture just a few years later. The new electric brushless motors coupled with the powerful LiPo battery backs are killing their Nitro competition. Of course die-hard nitro lovers will still in all likelihood stick to nitro for rather some time but the big divergence in power that nitro employed to have as an vantage isn’t there anymore. People are switching to electric engines because they are quieter, cleaner and require much less maintenance / tweaking and tuning equated to nitro engines. The brushless electric motors are exceptionally beautiful to those that are new to the RC hobby, and don’t want to go through the learning curve of learning how to break-in, tune and finetune a nitro powered engine. These trucks running electric motors may effortlessly reach speeds of up to 50+ mph straight out of the box and even up to 65+ mph with a good deal of minor modifications and hop-up parts. Another added gain to the new brushless systems is that most of them now run everything on the truck itself off the battery packs, without necessitated extra batteries for the receiver/steering servo, and an extra batter pack for an engine starter such as is necessitated with nitro engines. You now just need to worry regarding one set of batteries for your radio and one set of batteries for your truck. No more having to worry in regards to having three dissimilar sets of batteries charged on top of your nitro fuel. |
